Powder are one of  the most basic makeup products, and are often the only makeup product used by women in some countries. Powders are basically used to absorb excess oil from the skin and prevent the face from shining. It acts as a base for the rest of  the makeup applied to the face and helps it stay in place.

There are 2 main types of  makeup available - loose powder which is packed in tins/containers and pressed powder makeup which is stored in compacts. Loose powder is used by makeup professionals and does not contain any binding agent. The powder should be applied in the morning before leaving home, so that the face looks fresh for the rest of  the day. Since loose powder absorbs excess oil, it should be used for oily or normal skin.

Powder compacts which are convenient to carry, contain compressed powder. Pressed powder is used for touching up the makeup whenever required throughout the day. Usually pressed powder is applied with a sponge, but using a powder brush may give better finish. However, clumps can be formed in pressed powder. Persons with dry skin should use pressed powder as it contains moisture.

If your face is moist, remove the excess moisture using a blotting paper and only then apply the powder. The powder should applied with a powder brush downward , to prevent the small hairs on the face from standing.

Powder can be either a talc or mineral powder. Mineral powder makeup is made from fine particles of  natural minerals like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide.  Mineral powder makeup contains no talc and can be used safely on all skin types. They also protect the skin against sunlight and are fairly resistant to moisture.
