Toners are cosmetic products which are designed to remove dirt, cleanse and shrink the pores on the skin. They also restore the pH balance of  the skin. While most cosmetic professionals, will claim that a toner should be used before applying makeup,  many end users may not find it necessary. Persons will normal skin may prefer to clean it by washing with soap and water.

The term "toner" is often  used to describe toners, fresheners or astringents, though each of  these products have different ingredients and  applications. Most toners are water based with herbal extracts like aloe Vera and essential oils to soothe the skin. Persons with normal, sensitive and dry skin should use fresheners like rose water which are alcohol free. Fresheners also contain an additive like glycerin, which prevent the moisture from the upper layer of  the skin from evaporating.

Astringents are suitable for oily skin and contain 20-60% alcohol. They may remove the excess oil from the skin, but this could also increase the oil production as skin tries to compensate for the loss of moisture. Alpha hydroxy or beta hydroxy acid (salicylic acid) may be included in the toners for treatment of acne. Salicylic acid helps to remove the bacteria and dead skin cells that cause acne. Astringent should be only applied on areas where pimples are likely to occur.

Toners are usually applied to the face using damp cotton wool or a gauze. They can also be sprayed on to the face. Some toners can be used specifically for treating red irritated skin or removing dead skin cells. Toners containing witch hazel may dry the skin, so a moisturizer like honey may have to be used.
